Communication of documents in foreign languages
In 1539, the edict of Villers-Cotterêts of August 25 established French as the language of justice. This edict still applies today to proceedings and judgments. However, the Court of Cassation considers that the judge "is entitled, in the exercise of his sovereign power, to disregard as evidence a written document in a foreign language if not accompanied by its translation in French" (Cass. Com. Nov 27, 2012, no. 11-17.185).
Article 5.5 (Communication of documents) of the French rules of professional conduct for lawyers states that "documents (...) in foreign languages shall be accompanied by an unofficial translation; in case of controversy, a sworn translator will be required" (RIN, February 4, 2023).
