I favour a contextual approach to translation, which involves expressing the original message as clearly and effectively as possible, taking into account the author's intention (objective), the communication medium and the target reader's expectations. In short, I apply the very principles of communication:
target, key message, objective, media.
Marketing translation encompasses communications designed to promote the company or its products and services.
Legal translation requires precision and rigor. It must remain faithful to the meaning of the original text, and the drafting must be meticulous.
Need a translation?
There are several types of correction. What they all have in common is the need to ensure the quality of the translation, but the level of quality required is not always the same.
Post-editing corrects the shortcomings of machine translation, revision corrects those of human translation, and proofreading addresses typos or the editorial style of the target text (translated or not).
Raw machine translation (MT) is never 100% reliable, and cannot be considered for professional use without human supervision.
Post-editing is machine work that requires a great deal of attention. Its aim is to increase productivity to meet the needs of the market: faster and cheaper. Errors and omissions are corrected, but syntax is only corrected when it is at fault; the action on style is therefore very limited, as it does not involve rewriting the entire text.
MT is not suitable for all types of text.
Make sure both texts say the same thing
The two texts are carefully compared, looking for any omissions, unnecessary additions or misunderstandings, inconsistencies in terminology, etc., regardless of editorial style.
Stylistic blunders are pointed out.
Bilingual revision is part of the quality process.
I check my own translations in all cases, but can also suggest a revision by another translator if you don't have the possibility of doing this in-house.
Can (or should) the wording be improved?
The text may be translated or written directly in French.
Two levels of service:
Transcription of audio recordings is always done in the mother tongue, where the ear is sharpest.
Automatic transcription can save time, but is not totally reliable. Background noise, multiple speakers, rapid or difficult elocution, strong accents, etc. can interfere with the machine's performance.
If the transcribed text is to be exploited, it's best to plan for human editing.
